شرع الجهاد في الإسلام لنشر الدعوة ، وتصحيح عقائد البشر ، تخليصهم من الظلم والعبودية لغير الله تعالى . وينتهي قتال الأعداء إذا تحقق أحد أمور ثلاثة : 1 – قبول الكفار الدخول في الإسلام . 2 – قبول الكفار الدخول تحت حكم الإسلام والتخلي عن حكم الطاغوت [[ دخولهم في عهد الذمة ]] . 3 – انتصار المسلمين على الكفار ، وفتح بلادهم . وقد تضافرت الأدلة على إنهاء القتال بواحدة من هذه الطرق قال تعالى [[ فإن تابوا وأقاموا الصلاة وآتو الزكاة فخلو سبيلهم إن اله غفور رحيم ]] التوبة ، الآية [5] . ومن وصايا الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم لأمراء الجيوش : إذا لقيت عدوك من المشركين فادعهم إلى ثلاث خصال فأتيهن ما أجابوك فأقبل منهم ، وكف عنهم : دعهم إلى الإسلام فإن أجابوك فأقبل منهم ، وكف عنهم .. الخ .$
